ANCOP-GK : Mission and
Vision
1) To make better the quality of life of poor families
2) To
improve the communities where they live through a sustainable
and holistic approach.
What is GK?
It is an acronym for
Gawad Kalinga, directly translated as "giving care
".
GK is defined by the three levels of transformation that take place in the lives of those that it touches.
The first level: Restoring
Dignity and Hope.
The poor, who have nothing materially, also have nothing spiritually. They hold no hope in the future because their day-to-day existence is never certain and miserable. Hope and Dignity are the first gifts they receive through GK. Their perspective in life is changed and therefore their lives become better.
The second level:
Transformation
The physical transformation from slums and shanties to clean beautiful homes with hygienic surroundings is made possible through GK. The accompanying attitude transformation allows them to become law abiding citizens, who become respectful, compassionate, generous of their blessings, and turn away from vices. They value hard work and become optimistic.
The third level: Community
Development
Providing shelter is the first phase of the development program. Four other equally important and complementary components: education, livelihood health and value formation are made available to result in an integrated, holistic and sustainable community development program.
What is GK 777?
GK 777 is the vision of building 700,000 homes in 7,000 communities in 7 years.
It is the miraculous revolution presently transforming the Philippines from a nation of slums to a peaceful, clean and beautiful community. It is a growing multi-sectoral partnership driven by a vision of a new Philippines with "No More Slums."

What is a GK home?
A GK home is a modest 200-250 sq. ft. home, with the following features:
| - Concrete flooring, paved | - Galvanized iron roofing |
| - 1 Enclosed room | - 1 Toilet |
| - Kitchen | - Painted with bright colors |
| - Access to potable water | - Landscaped gardens |
Why paint the GK home with
bright colors?
Bright colors are the colors of hope that serve as a constant reminder to the poor that their lives have been changed for the better.
Why landscaped gardens?
The gardens contribute to clean and green surroundings. The exercise of tending to the gardens strengthens sense of ownership, and personal satisfaction while the collective effort of all families gardening fosters sense of community.
What is a GK Village?
A GK village is a community composed of 20 to 100 homes of poor families living in a clustered or contiguous area.
Why is "cluster" development
important?
Cluster development provides maximum visual impact as against sporadic, fragmented building. It facilitates the set-up and mobilization of the Kapitbahayan (Neighbourhood Association), a necessary aspect of the GK community. It speeds up physical and attitude transformation of the residents.
What is the cost of a GK home?
A GK
home costs $2,300 which covers the basic material cost of a 200-250 sq.
ft. home. Labor cost comes from sweat
equity: beneficiary and volunteer labor. Site development costs (deep
wells, pavements, sewer systems) and peripheral costs (multi-purpose halls, playgrounds) come on top of the
$2,300 CDN.
What are the criteria for GK area selection?
- Poor and marginalized area in a locality.
- Land issues resolved.
- Existence of a dedicated GK caretaker team to oversee implementation of the GK project, mobilize volunteer resources, provide feedback to donors and to ensure that value formation program is carried out.
- Willingness of the locals to set up
a Kapitbahayan association.
What are the
criteria for GK beneficiary selection?
- Poorest of the poor (A survey is conducted to determine income, source of livelihood, family size)
- Willingness to give sweat equity payback
- Willingness to abide by the rules, and be active members, of the Kapitbayahan.
- Willingness to go through the values
formation program.
